I just read the most beautifully written, intelligent piece on learning to salsa. The article is called The Dance of Imperfection and was, interestingly enough, written for a publication about yoga and health.
The author, Laura Didyk, talks about the challenges one faces in class (including misplaced arms and collisions, as I did a few posts ago), and then taking those skills to the dance floor. She speaks to the feelings of inadequacy one feels upon being the recipient of a “pity dance” (as a friend of mine called it the other day). In the end, she makes the case for why the challenge of learning salsa makes it so rewarding.
